Who Is Jesus?

Jesus is probably the most revolutionary, controversial figure of all time.

Even our calendar dates are measured from the time he spent here on earth. Everywhere he went people either loved him or hated him. Very few could remain indifferent. It seems to be the same way today. Who is this man whose life and death (and life!) are unparalleled in history?

Jesus himself was curious as to what other people thought about who he was. He asked his followers:

“Who do people say the Son of Man is?” (Matthew 16:13)

They replied that many thought he was John the Baptist or Elijah returned from the dead, or that he was a prophet like those in the Old Testament. Most people saw him as just another holy man or rabbi who was no different than so many that had come before. Simon Peter saw more. He said, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” Jesus told Peter, “You’re right.” (Matthew 16: 13-16)

Jesus had plenty to say about himself.

Some of what he said got him into trouble. The claims he made about who he was were hard for a lot of people to swallow. He claimed to be God. (John 10:31-33). He said, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” (John 14:6). He said he was a king (John 18:33-37).

The things he did caused people to shake their heads in amazement. He raised dead people back to life, cast demons out of people, and made food multiply and change form. He suspended the laws of nature and physics. Even his own family had trouble with the things he said and did (Mark 3:21).

His message and his mission were “Repent! (turn around) Believe in me and be reconciled to God.” Jesus spoke of his coming kingdom that would last forever. He said anyone could come and be received with open arms and begin a new life.He claimed to be God.

He is God and He is alive.

Today people still wrestle with the person of Jesus Christ.

Every one of us has to decide what we will believe about him. Those of us who know him personally can testify that he is God and he is alive. Jesus is inviting you to find out what many others already have – that he will forgive your sins and give you rest for your soul; that he will restore to your life the meaning and purpose you were made for, and that you can spend eternity experiencing the depths of goodness, grace, and love that are found only in him.

This is how much God loved the world: He gave his Son, so that no one need

be destroyed; by believing in him, anyone can have a whole and lasting life. (John 3:16 MSG)

How do I receive what Jesus came to give?

Help comes to those who recognize they have a need. We have to understand that we are far away from God because of our wrong choices where we have stepped over the line and Jesus is the only One who can bring us back. We must admit we are not able to live right by ourselves. When we are ready to do this then we only have to ask:

You can have a new beginning.

Your first step in meeting Jesus Christ and experiencing a whole life is to submit to God and his plan and purpose for you.

When you come to Christ you are turning away from our old ways and turning to Jesus, to ask him for forgiveness from our sins and to give us new life in Him.

Romans 10:9 says that “If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.”

Salvation is God’s free gift to us.

It is an irrevocable acceptance into the family of God and it is an empowerment to live life wholly and fully with the purpose of reflecting God to the rest of His creation.

If you are not sure whether you are right with God or you know in fact that you need Jesus in your life, you can choose to follow Him right now by praying a prayer of surrender to Jesus. Pray this prayer out loud

I have been far away from God because of the way I have chosen to live my life. I have tried to do good and to do right and have found that, by myself I am not able to – not as I should. I don’t want to go through life without you anymore. I need you; I need your love and forgiveness. Forgive me for the many wrong choices I have made. I want to be restored to the Father. Come into my life and make me a new person. Give me rest in my soul. Give me back the meaning and purpose in life that I was created for. I surrender my life to you right now and receive your love and salvation. I want to live and serve you in your kingdom now and forever. Thank you!

I pray in Jesus’ name, amen.
